At Galloway and Macleod, we’ve been supporting Scottish farmers for over a century - not only our high-quality feeds and Agri supplies, but by arming farmers with all the information they need to evolve their business. Recently, the Scottish government has announced a new wave of rural business grants under the future farming investment scheme in Scotland.

Crucial Information: The FFIS Application window opens 14th July 2025 and closes 22nd August 2025.

But first, let’s understand:

What is the future farming investment scheme?

For those who may be new to the scheme, the future farming investment scheme (FFIS) for Scotland is designed to provide grants to farmers for upgrading their farming practices and equipment to meet sustainable farming targets. These sustainable farming targets have been introduced by the Scottish government to reduce the carbon emissions involved with the production of food products across the country.

The overall aim of FFIS grants are to make sure Scottish farms are operating in a way that is sustainable for the environment, that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and are more efficient in yields while staying climate-friendly overall.

How much funding can I get for my farm?

That’ll depend on the eligibility criteria and the overall size of your farm. In total, the FFIS has set aside a £14 million budget for the rural business grants to accomplish their sustainability goal and will provide up to 100% up-front funding for farmers to ease the cost burden on upgrading their farm. Farmers that qualify for the scheme can receive grants between £5,000 and £20,000, depending on the size of their farm.

It is crucial to note that the grants themselves can be quite competitive to get and being awarded a grant will be based on the evidence you provide in your application, and if this application is ultimately successful.

When applying for a grant from the future farming investment scheme, you’ll first need to meet certain criteria. These are:

  • You must be a farmer, or a crofter.

  • Your business, even if it is an agricultural business, needs to meet the legal definition of a “farmer” that undertakes “agricultural activity” that is defined in Annex G on the Rural Payments website.

  • Your business is registered and has been approved for funding with SGRPID.

  • Your business has submitted a Single Application Form (also known as a SAF) by the 15th May

  • The total area of eligible agricultural land (excluding common grazing shares) is greater than 3 hectares. This should have been declared on your SAF by the 15th May.

It is also worth noting that funding from this payment scheme is prioritised for:

  • New entrants

  • Young Farmers

  • Small Farms

  • Island-based and organic businesses.
